Literacy Mission

Due to rapid social and economic changes in the region, the language of the Akha and their traditional knowledge has come under threat. Relocations have split villages apart or moved them out of larger village clusters where they worked closely together.

Many Akha children have been removed from their families, separated from their own language.

As an important role in protecting the traditional knowledge of the Akha and helping the children to read their own language we are transcribing Akha Oral Texts into written book form. This requires that we work with editors in Myanmar, writers and village elders.  Our goal is 101 books in the Akha language. Our goal is to provide Akha families and displaced children with books that can help them maintain their village knowledge under difficult conditions and to encourage a growing written literature.
